The Ross Police Internship Program is based upon the principle that there is a fundamental difference between learning in a classroom environment and exposure to real life situations.  This program seeks to provide its participants with supervised field activity where an intern is able to see the inner workings of a successful police department, and experience the life and job of a police officer in various capacities.

Eligible Personnel

     Internship Programs are available to the following:

1.   Students currently enrolled in a criminal justice, sociology, or similar class or course of study at an accredited school, academy, or college that would benefit from this program.

2.   Instructors at an accredited school, academy, or college; who teach a class or course based in the criminal justice, sociology, or similar field that are seeking to broaden their personnel experiences in order to provide a better education to their students.

3.   Individuals currently employed in a criminal justice or public safety capacity who would be well served by the experiences and exposure received in this program.
 
The above listed criteria are not intended to be all encompassing and all prospective interns will be reviewed for eligibility and acceptance on an individual basis.

Application for Admittance
     1. All individuals requesting admittance into the program must submit a letter with at least two, non-relation, references.  This letter should be submitted to the program administrator or his designee.
  
     2. All potential interns should be scheduled for and pass a screening interview with the program officer and at least one program supervisor.  The program administrator may also attend if available.
    

Programs

1.   One day (8 hours or less): The intern will experience one shift of routine patrol.  This may but will necessarily include:
      - Roll call
      - Patrol assignments
      - Pre-patrol vehicle check
      -Traffic stops
      -Response to calls for emergency situations and the upholding of civil order.

2.   One week (16-40 hours): The intern will experience various shifts of patrol.  This may but will not necessarily include:
      -Criminal court at the local district justice
      -Roll call
      -Patrol assignments
      -Pre-patrol vehicle check
      -Traffic stops
      -Response to calls for emergency situations and the upholding of civil order.

3.   One month or more grater than 40 hours:  The intern will experience various shifts of patrol.  This may but will not                            necessarily include:
       -Familiarization with departments specialized programs: K-9, Armory, Evidence, Detective, and SpecialPrograms
       -Criminal court at the local district justice. 
       -Criminal court at the Allegheny county courthouse
       -Class in school with DARE officers
       -Tour of the Allegheny county crime lab and coroner’s office
       -Roll call
       -Patrol assignments
       -Pre-patrol vehicle check
       -Traffic stops
       -Response to calls for emergency situations and the upholding of civil order.
            -Crash investigation
            -Physical, on view, and by mail arrest
            -Burglary report/ investigation
            -Domestic dispute
            -Evidence recovery and packaging
            -General investigation
            -Lost children/ person
            -Mental health, 302
            -Retail theft
            -Traffic control
            -General familiarity with EMS and Fire

These above examples are mere possibilities and not meant to circumvent an established curriculum required by a school, academy, or college.  These programs can be changed as needed on an individual basis as needed.
