Chief Vernon Porter Moses of The Ross Police Department was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday May 3rd 1932. Chief Moses was conducting a traffic stop on Perrysville Avenue when he was shot to death by the occupants of the vehicle. Chief Moses is one of 685 Pennsylvania Police Officers whose names appear on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
 

 

 

 
Sergeant John Herb was born in 1956 and was a life long resident of Ross Township. Sergeant Herb was a graduate of the North Hills High School and a 1978 Graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Sergeant Herb enlisted with the Ross Police Department in 1980. Sergeant Herb served 8 years in the Patrol Division until in 1988 when he was assigned to the Detective Division. In 1997, John Herb was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was re-assigned to the Patrol Division where he served as a shift supervisor. In 1998, Sergeant Herb was diagnosed with colon cancer and spent the following two years fighting this disease. Sergeant John Herb passed away on June 28, 2000 as a result of his battle with cancer. Sergeant Herb is survived by his wife and two children. In 2001 the newly constructed baseball field located at the new municipal complex was named “John Herb Field” in his memory.
