Special Programs Division

The Special Programs Division conducts the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program in the elementary level grades (K-6), the junior high level grades (7-9) and in the senior high school grades (11-12). The D.A.R.E. officers also attend PTA meetings, are members of the Drug Free Schools Advisory Council and write grants for the department to obtain funding for the D.A.R.E. program.

Patrolman Michael J. Thomas is also the Ross Police Department Juvenile Officer, who coordinates all juvenile arrests, maintains the juvenile records and is the liaison with juvenile court and probation officials.

The Special Programs Division members are also responsible for properly maintaining and securing all evidence and property held by the Ross Township Police Department. Additionally, the Special Programs Division insure the integrity seals are intact and they maintain a continuous chain of custody of all evidence and property.

The Special Programs Division log and store all evidence and property that comes into the possession of the police department so that the items can easily be retrieved for presentation in court proceedings or the return to its owners. Special Programs Division file all proper court orders to destroy items that are unclaimed or no longer have evidentiary value and supervise the purging of such items.

The Special Programs Division insures that all evidence needing expert analysis is delivered to and retrieved from the Allegheny County or Pennsylvania State Police Crime Labs in a timely manner and that the reports from the crime labs are properly disseminated.
